The online gaming industry has been classified under the entertainment industry for decades. Still, it has only recently enjoyed the same level of popularity as other forms of entertainment, such as tv, movies and music.

Online gaming can be played alone, but it’s usually played with other players in the same room or worldwide. Online games are often competitive, relying on other players and not just artificial intelligence (AI).
Some popular genres of online gaming include action-adventure games, first-person shooter games and multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). Top online games are Fortnite, Call of Duty, Minecraft and League of Legends.
E-sports
E-sports, also known as electronic sports, professional gaming and esports, is a term for organised video game competitions that are often played at professional levels. E-sports can be played in various formats, but single or double-elimination tournament formats are the most common.
The major e-sports leagues are organised by third-party organisations with tournament sponsorships from game developers.
State of the Online Gaming Industry from 2020 to 2021
Gaming is one of the significant industries that flourished during the Covid-19 pandemic and continues to witness growth in its products’ demand.
Accessories, virtual platforms, software sales and, gaming consoles, game accessories like headsets and controllers experienced massive growth in sales.
The online gaming culture worldwide has evolved to adapt during the pandemic. The lockdowns and restrictions made people search for an extensive gaming experience within the confinement of their homes.
People moved from traditional hardware to embracing recent trends, seeking ultra-gaming variants and upgrading existing game devices to PS5 and the latest Xbox Series.
The gaming culture expanded with more and more streamers joining virtual game streaming. Customers supporting streamers and content creators also displayed an improvement in revenue figures.
While online game development flourished, physical gaming venues and events declined. Physical gaming venues shut down during the pandemic because of government regulations.
